February 2012 Cooking Classes & Chinatown Tour

Cooking Classes are held at Palama Market Dillingham, 1210 Dillingham Blvd behind Zippy’s Dillingham. To make reservations, email walter@waltereatshawaii.com or call 391-1550. Fee is $80 per cooking class. Payment is in cash only at the beginning of each class. Fee includes food samples, recipes, and taxes.

Please bring tupperware to cooking classes to take the leftovers home. It is also highly recommended not to eat before coming to class.


Ultrafast Meals in 19 Minutes or less
February 16 Thursday, 2:30 – 5:00 pm

Tired? Rushed? Learn to cook simple, yet savory, Asian meals in a jiffy. Broiled chicken wings in Singapore sauce; moo shu pork; vegetarian pad Thai; Oriental steak; Peking chicken; shrimp and eggs; Chinese broccoli in oyster sauce; and ma po tofu. One of the most popular cooking class in the 17 years of Walter Rhee’s teaching, this one is not to be missed.

Korean Side Dishes (Namools & Beyond)
February 17 Friday, 4:00 – 6:30 pm

Ever wonder about how to make Korean side dishes (banchans) served in restaurants? They are actually simple to make. Doo boo jorim (braised tofu w/ garlic & peppers), gah ji (egg plant), ge rahn mahl yi (egg roll), ge-ran chim (steamed egg), ho bahk sae woo juht (zucchini w/ salted shrimp), kong namool (fresh sautéed soy sprouts), moo chae (pickled radish), myul chi bokkum (“candied anchovies”), oi-moochim (sweet and sour garlicky cucumbers), and taegu (spicy sweet dry cod) are some of the samples prepared in this class.

Korean-Chinese Cooking
February 18 Saturday, 2:30 – 5:00 pm

Discover cooking secrets of the dishes Koreans will always order in a Korean-Chinese restaurant. Korean-Chinese mandoo; Chajangmyun (black bean sauce noodles); champong (spicy seafood noodles); lahjohgi (hot spicy chicken); and sogogi tang soo yook (sweet & sour beef).

More Ultrafast Meals in 19 Minutes or Less
February 23 Thursday 17, 2:30 – 5:00 pm

By request, this class is offered for more quick Asian recipes: Vietnamese wonton soup; Thai chicken curry; Japanese chicken with eggs over rice; Korean spicy squid stir fry with vegetables; Korean soft-tofu seafood soup; & Chinese paper bag shrimp. You thought first ultrafast meals class was good, this one’s mo’ better. Anybody can join this class. There are no prerequisites-no need to have taken the original Ultrafast Meals class.

Asian Dumplings
February 24 Thursday, 4:00 – 6:30 pm

You know them by gaoji, gyoza, jiaozu, wonton, hoanh tanh, mandoo, etc. Ever wonder why the dumplings from China, Japan, and Korea are called different and taste different? Find out why and prepare them from scratch. This is an all hands-on class from start to finish.

Oodles of Korean Noodles
February 25 Saturday, 3:00 –6:00 pm

Learn how to make various type of Korean noodles-ones you already know and some new ones. Sweet bibim kooksoo; spicy bibim kooksoo; mandoo kooksoo; cold noodles (naeng myun); chol myun (chewy noodles); kohng kooksoo (soybean extract cold noodles); kimchi bibim kooksoo; Korean oden udon; and chajahngmyun (Korean-Chinese black bean noodles). Sauces, toppings, and broth for each noodle dish will be made in class. Slurping is optional.

*Taste of Chinatown Eateries Tour ($80, cash only the day of the tour. Fee includes all food and taxes). Advance reservations required. Tour runs most Saturdays. Weekday tours can be accommodated upon request with an advanced notice of 2 weeks and minimum of 6 people.
February 18 Saturday, 8:30 am – 12:30 pm

This mouth-watering tour will direct you to what to eat, where to go, how to eat, and how to tell a good place with samples of Asian foods found in Honolulu’s Chinatown. Walter will provide the inside detail on the dishes from his eclectic knowledge of historical, cultural, and food science background. Get the insider’s guide to become a savvy Asian food connoisseur in a day. Comfy walking shoes, an appetite for food discovery, and stretchy pants are highly advised! Please note that the time for this tour is based on 12 people; if less than 12 people, the tour will end earlier.
